My current home doesn't have a verandah or even a porch but I dream of owning a little farmette again, with a verandah overlooking chickens, goats and gardens. Absolute heaven!

Truck topper as chicken coop

Ok, so we haven't finished building the chicken coops. Or, ok, even started. We have part of the fencing up. Need to put up the gate. S. Gates. Finished the poultry fencing. Separate the two chicken pens. Then build the coops.

Dang. Lots of work.
We just want to get Henny Penny out in the chicken pen so she can enjoy being outside again. Then we can move the baby chicks into the indoor pen because they are starting to fly out of their brooder box!

But I was reading something and it hit me... there HAS to be a way to get a cheap chicken coop and quick. Ta da! Truck topper. Like this picture of one I just located on Craigslist (waiting for him to call me back). Put it up on cinder blocks, enclose with plywood walls (double thickness with styrofoam in between for insulation), with a little hole cut out at the south side for them to get in, and install perches to roost on and buckets to lay eggs in. Get the eggs from the sliding back windows.

Barely any work, which fits my bill! Of course, won't look purty but still ... won't the chickens have fun jumping up on top of it!

Should work, right?

Now... where am I gonna get $50 for a topper?!?!

the coop is now built, and I thinkt he truck topper is gonna be raised & used as a sunshade.

We were lucky enough to pick our up on freecycle..... so... free! i like free, free is good!!

How could I forget about freecycle?!?! Thanks so much for the reminder. Just found one in a town that's not too terribly far away and requested membership. Hope we get accepted soon. Thanks again. Vikki
